Horticulture Trainees
Horticulture trainees play an important role in the Danish agricultural industry and the production of fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. They contribute to sustainable farming practices, support the reliable production of fresh produce, and help strengthen daily operations across greenhouses and field production environments. Their role is important not only for the agricultural industry, but for society as a whole.
Bixter.Work provides Danish greenhouse and field owners with access to motivated, educated international trainees currently enrolled in relevant higher education programmes. These trainees bring fresh perspectives, adaptability, and practical knowledge while gaining hands-on experience through structured traineeship placements in Denmark.
International trainees from Bixter.Work come from top-selected educational institutions worldwide and are typically adaptable, motivated, and eager to develop practical industry experience in European agriculture.

- Trainees who are physically fit and able to perform practical farm tasks.
- Stable trainees. As non-EU trainees require work and residence permits in Denmark, their permit is linked to one approved host company for the duration of the traineeship period, which can last up to 1.5 years.
- Ongoing support from Bixter throughout the full traineeship period.
Bixter operates legally and transparently by connecting Danish host companies with motivated international students currently enrolled in relevant higher education programmes worldwide.
The traineeship category is intended for students between approximately 20–30 years old who are currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree related to the traineeship placement in Denmark.
Many people confuse international trainees with traditional employees or short-term university trainees. However, the international traineeship model is a structured educational and practical training pathway regulated by the Danish Migration Service.
The Danish Migration Service has established a specific work and residence permit category for non-EU nationals under the traineeship scheme. These regulations allow currently enrolled students from non-EU countries to receive practical in-company training in Denmark for up to 18 months.
The programme is intended for students with ongoing university education and sufficient English or German language skills, documented through recognised language tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, KET, or Goethe certifications.
Bixter promotes these opportunities through international partners, educational institutions, and direct cooperation with selected universities worldwide.
It is important to note that the average waiting period for the arrival of trainees is typically around two months due to mandatory visa processing times.
For this reason, host companies should plan recruitment needs in advance when preparing for international traineeship placements.
Trainees typically work 37 hours per week according to Danish industry standards. Overtime may occasionally occur during periods such as harvest season.
Please note that long or frequent overtimes for trainees will not be in conformity with the requirements of their work and residence permit, as the normal workweek in these circumstances is not 37 hours.
To host non-EU trainees, appropriate accommodation must be provided by the host company for an affordable monthly rent paid by the trainee.
Here is a list of requirements that need to be fulfilled:
The accommodation should include:
- Single room accommodation (shared rooms only in exceptional cases)
- Furnished room with bed, closet, chair, table, and lighting
- Toilet and shower facilities
- Access to cooking facilities and refrigerator
- Access to washing machine
- Accommodation compliant with safety regulations
- Accommodation located close to the traineeship placement if no transportation is provided

Bixter helps reduce risk for the host company through a one-month replacement guarantee. A trainee replacement can be arranged free of charge in cases of significant mismatch with previously agreed recruitment criteria, consistently low performance, or violations related to drugs or alcohol.
At Bixter, we recognise that hosting international trainees creates valuable opportunities for cultural exchange and professional development. At the same time, all parties must respect the rules established by Danish migration authorities.
A trainee may only begin the traineeship placement once the appropriate permits linked to the host company have been issued by the Danish Migration Service.
